Film + Television WHY_IT_MATTERSNetflix Is Quietly Rewriting What Prestige Streaming Means
Long-term filmmaker deals are fading as the streamer leans harder toward episodic programming, live events and sports.
Netflix appears to be pulling back from the era when signing celebrated filmmakers to large multiyear deals was itself part of the brand. The Verge points to the end or departure of relationships involving filmmakers including David Fincher, Shawn Levy, the Duffer Brothers and Noah Baumbach, while noting that some major director relationships remain. The larger shift is toward programming that can bring viewers back repeatedly: lower-budget episodic series, live events, sports and reality formats. That changes more than a release calendar. The early streaming wars sold subscribers on the idea that platforms could function like prestige studios with enormous checkbooks. Netflix increasingly looks interested in a different proposition: frequency, habit and retention.
